OWATC Construction Trade Students Make Record Profit on Home
On December 19th the Ogden Weber Applied Technology College made a record profit on the sale of a home built by students and sold by the Utah Housing Corporation. This partnership with the Utah Housing Corporation allows technical colleges to focus on providing hands-on building experience for students in all aspects of home building while UHC takes care of the administrative aspects. OWATC construction trades students completed the masonry, cabinet making, plumbing, electrical, construction, and other aspects of the home. These educational programs are critical to the economic health of Weber County because workers in the construction trades are currently in short supply and the outlook is expected to worsen in the coming years. For example, the average age of a carpenter nationwide is 55 and as these workers retire, new ones must be trained to fill these good-paying jobs. The Utah Housing Corporation is a self-supporting public corporation established by Governor Leavitt to provide affordable housing.
