Course Descriptions

The Computer Aided Design Technology program prepares students for entry-level employment as a computer drafter or computer drafter assistant.  Students will receive specific software training as well as specific hands-on building training within the area of design that they choose.  All students will be required to learn the 2D drafting software offered.  After that, there are four areas of emphasis within the CADT program that students choose from:  Architectural, Structural, Manufacturing, and Civil.  The architectural emphasis requires 3D Architectural software training as well as hands-on building training within the construction programs; the structural emphasis requires 3D structural software training as well as hands-on building training within the construction and manufacturing programs; the manufacturing emphasis requires 3D manufacturing software training as well as hands-on building training within the manufacturing programs; and the civil emphasis requires 3D civil software training as well as hands-on building training within the construction programs.

With a CADT certificate, students will be working with architects, engineers, and design drafters in preparing a variety of design drawings used to make equipment, parts, devices, houses, buildings, and structures for business and industry.  Design drafters will be using a variety of computer design programs to complete drawings.

Student Success Story:

Zackary Weaver began attending the Drafting program as a high school junior back in December 2004.  In the beginning, Zack was a typical high school student who struggled accomplishing work and receiving progress because of young age and a lack of motivation.  But he continued slowly and persistently and, as his maturity level grew, his desire to complete and become productive increased and success became vitally important.  It took time but with his persistence, Zack was able to finish and early in 2013, Zack received a drafting position at PowerBlanket in Salt Lake as a CAD drafter making use of his SolidWorks skills.  Zack is a quiet, shy kid but even with that was able to see success.  Zack has just recently married.

What's Happening in the Program

The Computer Aided Design Technology (CADT) program will be embarking on a new approach in student learning beginning the new school year of 2013.  Some skills from the past that were lost will be part of the requirements for the CADT certificate.  CADT Students will be required to build things with their hands.  With this skill training, students’ understanding will blossom, their hand skills will increase, and a better designer will result as they complete the certificate.

Your Instructor(s)

Rex Thornock received a drafting certificate from the Ogden-Weber Area Vocational Center in 1987. He had nine years of industry experience as a CAD drafter at the following companies: Chromalox (Ogden), Fram Inc. (Clearfield), Bourn’s Sensors/Controls (Ogden), and KHI Engineers (Salt Lake) prior to receiving the CAD drafting instructor position here at the Ogden-Weber Applied Technology College in 1996. In 2006, he received an Associates of Applied Science Degree in Design Graphics Engineering Technology from Weber State University. He currently holds a 2010 Professional Educator License for the State of Utah, Level 2 for Career and Technical Education with a Drafting/CAD endorsement.
