Information Technology

The college offers several options for training in Information Technology including network administration and security, help desk, and programming for applications development and website development. Careers are usually focused on one or two areas but can overlap several for broader skill sets and opportunity for employment.

Networking

A network administrator is the individual responsible for the installation, management, and control of a network. This normally includes deploying, configuring, maintaining and monitoring active network equipment and operating systems.

An associated role is that of the network specialist, network analyst, or information security specialist, who concentrates on network design and security. This role safeguards computer systems and protects them from a variety of threats and risks, internal or external in nature.

Help Desk

An IT help desk rep may be  responsible for:

  • The maintenance of desktop computers within an organization, providing information and assistance to the users of a computer network with troubleshooting hardware/software, preventive maintenance, and network connectivity.
  • Supporting customers after point of sale with products and troubleshooting via chat, phone, or remote connection.
  • Track and log issue resolution using a help desk ticketing system
  • Manage inventory and track assets

Programming

An application programmer designs any program to perform a specific function for users or, in some cases, for another application program. Examples of application programs include word processors; Web browsers; drawing, paint, and image editing programs; and communication programs.  Several different programming languages such as C++, VisualBasic .NET, and Java are used to create an application. The API or application program interface is used by a programmer to write an application program to issue requests for service and is the means of communicating with other programs.

A web developer is responsible for designing the “look and feel” plus programming the functionality of a web site while interacting with clients. Much of this programming code is behind the scenes and not visible to the user; however, a web developer may also be responsible for the code that the user sees. HTML & PHP are languages that make up most of the web pages users interact with in a web browser. Other programs used for development of websites include Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Dreamweaver, SEO (Search Engine Optimization), CSS & MySQL.

Working Conditions

Generally information technology workers work in well-lighted, clean office environments and can be full-time, part-time, or contract work, depending on the company. Working hours can vary from days to graveyard shifts.

Training, Requirements, and Qualifications

Employers prefer to hire graduates of formal training programs in information technology. They also look for experienced workers or industry-certified applicants who have passed rigorous certification exams that indicate the applicant meets certain standards of competence. Internships are encouraged as part of the college experience and count toward graduation credits. Final exams in the Information Technology Program are often industry-standard certification exams.

Employers expect workers to be punctual, ready to work, and self-motivated. The flexible competency-based training contributes to this expectation by using a login system for attendance, progress standards, and goal-setting to complete training in a timely manner.

Employers may conduct background checks as a precursor to employment. Any felonies and/or misdemeanors identified may impact employability or internship opportunities. The college counselor and program advisor can discuss the issues as needed.

Drug screening is part of the normal employment process.

Job Outlook and Earnings

Employment of information technology workers in Utah is expected to have a 3.1% annual average growth rate through the year 2020, under the category of Computer and Mathematical Occupations, Computer Specialists, http://jobs.utah.gov/wi/pubs/outlooks/state/statepublish.pdf . Average wage is $34,450.00 .

Even though this rate is the second highest in the Utah major occupational group list, it doesn’t mean that applicants will not have to work hard to obtain employment. Earnings will vary depending on experience, skill level, location, and company pay structures. Job titles and descriptions are not standardized so employers create job titles and descriptions according to what the business requires applicants to perform. Job searches will require keywords to narrow the scope and find available employment in the marketplace.

The College offers support and assistance at the Student Success Center in the Union Building (UB106) to teach students how to search jobs, network with employment groups, create resumes, interview and market their skills.

Job Search Checklist

Each Information Technology program applicant must come to the academic advisement with advisors prepared to talk about training. Look at your field/s of interest (networking, programming, security, web development, etc.) and search for job requirements on the Internet in Utah.

If you have some ideas of what future employment fits your goals, your advisors are in a better position to help direct your training. We recommend this assignment be repeated over the course of your training and fills two purposes: 1) You will be on top of the employment market you desire to work in and are ready for employment upon certificate completion; 2) You can tailor your training to fit the requirements of employers where you want to work.

Shon, Programming Instructor and Advisor, has over 13 years of programming experience in industry; programming for Fortune 500 companies as well as small, family-run businesses. A graduate of the Ogden Tech College with two certificates, Shon joined the faculty of the Ogden-Weber Tech College in 2005. His experience as a student of the college makes him keenly aware of the challenges our new students face when beginning their educational experience, as well as what is required to succeed.

Judi Elmer

Judi, A+ Certification & Networking Instructor and Advisor, has 15 years of teaching experience at the Ogden-Weber Tech College. She holds a Level 2 Professional Educator License in the state of Utah under the Career & Technical Education area. She also holds the industry-recognized CompTIA CTT+ (Certified Technical Trainer) certificate. Prior to her position at the college, Judi spent over 11 years gaining industry experience in technical support and management, with more industry-recognized certifications such as A+ and Microsoft. She brings a wealth of leadership skills and insight to students regarding what it takes to succeed.
